How do you advance then? Socially and in your own story/character life is how you do that.
You can work your way up the societal ladder, or work on building up your connections, or even just build your own private space in Manhattan. Advance your character story and your place in the world through any means you want, and you'll have more to work with, more you know, and more contacts. Certain things may get you easier checks on certain tasks.
There are Advantages, these are usually things like gadgets and owed favors, which give you a one off bonus to a check when you use them.
And lastly, remember that roleplaying your character well earns you the chance at Bennies, rewards that let you force a check to go any way you want. And you don't have to succeed either, we encourage people to let themselves fail for dramatic effect, which earns you tokens and Bennies if other players recognize your roleplaying.
